Camay Arad began "Chameleon" all because of the color purple!

The Purple Story (How we got started)

Tells Camay...
In 1988 I was newly single and bought a tiny fixer-upper to call my own. I painted it purple within and without. The front door was fuchsia, the shutters in deep plum. Purple was my "neutral" color. For 2 months a secret "ad-mowerer" edged, trimmed, and mowed my yard until I caught him in the act one morning. That was over 22 years ago and Win and I have been together ever since.

CHAMELEON FINE FURNITURE™ pieces.

When we decided to marry and blend households, the decorating challenges began. He refused to live with "that @#$% purple" and I didn’t want to settle on "boring bachelor beige". I suggested slipcovers but Win remembered the sloppy slipcover look from his mother’s house and firmly said no.

"I know we can make them differently," I declared.

In 1993 I sold my purple house to begin the development of Changeable Chameleon Fine Furniture… Slip-covered Furniture Without the Slip!

In 1997, Win and I opened our own shop in the Village of Arroyo Grande on California’s beautiful Central Coast. We had one sofa and ten bolts of fabric.

Where we are Today...

In 2005 we moved to our current location in the 105 year old Loomis Grain Mill we affectionately call "The Barn". We now have our own team of seamstresses and upholsterers, and actually manufacture the furniture on the premises. We've expanded our inventory to over 400 bolts of decorator fabrics along with a great selection of gifts and accessories to complement any décor.

in front of the Pasadena Store. Linnea is 99 years old,
very healthy, and helps out at the store.

In Spring 2011 we opened a second store in Pasadena, California in my old neighborhood.

My sweet, supportive 99 year old mother funded the opening of the store because she knows I’m a workaholic and it will give me a great excuse to visit and be with her more often.

Her energy has always been an inspiration to me and she is so active and healthy mentally and physically (though legally blind and almost deaf!)

My best friend Jan, from my earlier days in Pasadena is managing the store and we love the support we are getting from the community.

I have been so lucky to find wonderfully talented employees that are just as passionate about quality and our mission as I am.

Everyday is an adventure in design! We hope you will visit us and experience the magic of "Chameleon Style Decorating".
